3D-printed cartilage could restore ears, shoulders, knees and nose

A new technique for 3D printing cartilage could "revolutionise tissue engineering and regenerative medicine".
Cartilage is pretty important. It provides structure to parts of the body and softens the joints between bones. When cartilage is damaged, it can cause a lot of pain. And, unfortunately, cartilage does not regenerate well on its own, since it doesn't have a blood supply.
The field of bioprinting -- fabricating biological material with 3D printing -- is increasingly looking like an excellent option for restoring damaged cartilage. Last year, the Department of Health Sciences and Technology at ETH Zurich developed a method of 3D printing cartilage from biopolymers and cartilage cells.
Now a team, led by Paul Gatenholm at the Wallenberg Wood Science Center in Sweden, has developed a similar method and demonstrated its viability as a medical treatment by testing it on mice. They presented their research this week at the 251st National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
"Three-dimensional bioprinting is a disruptive technology and is expected to revolutionise tissue engineering and regenerative medicine," Gatenholm said in a statement. 
"Our team's interest is in working with plastic surgeons to create cartilage to repair damage from injuries or cancer. We work with the ear and the nose, which are parts of the body that surgeons today have a hard time repairing. But hopefully, they'll one day be able to fix them with a 3D printer."
Current methods of regenerating cartilage involve implanting cartilage-building cells in a scaffold and growing them in conditions similar to those found in the human body. The 3D-printing technique would print cells and scaffold together in the one step.
The problem Gatenholm's team found was that this would often result in a blobby mess. Creating a scaffold recipe that would keep its structure was key. To do so, they turned to plants. Using polysaccharides from brown algae and cellulose fibrils from wood, the mixture still kept its shape.
To see how it responded in a living system rather than a laboratory setting, the team implanted their samples into living mice. Sure enough, the cells survived and began to produce cartilage. The team was then able to increase this cartilage production by introducing stem cells found in bone marrow.
The technique is not quite ready for testing in humans, but Gatenholm is working with a plastic surgeon to make sure that any clinical trials comply with all regulations.

Intel eyes connected homes with Lantiq purchase

The company has been working to diversify beyond its personal-computer chips business. Last year's focus was on wearables.
Intel is expanding its push into the connected-home market, agreeing to buy home-networking and broadband chips company Lantiq.
The Munich, Germany-based company could help Intel build up its smart-home technologies, especially in residential gateways and smart routers, which are used as hubs to connect other devices around the house.
The deal, announced Monday, is expected to close in the next three months, though terms weren't released. Lantiq was created in 2009 when German chipmaker Infineon agreed to sell its wireline communications business to San Francisco-based private-equity firm Golden Gate Capital for 250 million euros ($280 million).
The deal is a small sample of a big push by many tech firms to get a piece of the rapidly expanding smart-home market. Last year, Samsung Electronics snapped up smart-home devices maker SmartThings for an undisclosed sum, and Google purchased smart thermostat maker Nest for $3.2 billion. These companies are all betting that people's homes will soon include many more connected devices, so they are busy making Internet-connected appliances and more complex routers.
The acquisition comes as Intel, based in Santa Clara, Calif., has been working to grow past its core personal-computer market, which had faced decline for years, and into new areas around the Internet of Things, in which just about anything can be connected to the Web. Many of Intel's Internet of Things deals last year centered on wearable technology, with the company teaming up with watchmaker Fossil and glasses-frame maker Luxottica to create new devices.

Sometimes, though, the police might be coy about which of these gadgets they use to protect and serve.

How to use WhatsApp from your computer

Tired of only being able to access your WhatsApp conversations on your phone? 
Start using WhatsApp Web.
       WhatsApp on an iPhone, with WhatsApp Web in the background. 
Earlier this week Facebook-owned WhatsApp announced WhatsApp Web. The new service makes it possible for a user to link a website accessible only through Google's Chrome browser to his or her WhatsApp account. In doing so, WhatsApp conversations will sync between the mobile device and desktop.

D-Link connects everything to everything else


Nervous home owners now have a new way to reduce their urban paranoia levels. The Mydlink Home system lets you monitor your mansion AND switch things on and off in it.

Hot on the heels of the Withings Home, here a slightly dowdier but no less high tech Home: the Mydlink Home from D-Link.

Comprising of a brace of a security cameras - the tilt-and-pannable Home Monitor 360 and the immobile Home Monitor HD - the self-explanatory Wi-Fi Motion Sensor, the Home Smart Plug and the Mydlink app, which receives Home gear alerts and lets you monitor and activate/deactivate electricals in your home.

Examples suggested by D-Link range from the sensible - a lamp that turns on via the Smart Plug when motion is detected by your Home Monitor camera - to the slightly mad - you can tune in to a Home Monitor camera to see if the iron is still on, and then deactivate it. Well, so long as you've put every square inch of your pad under Mydlink surveillance, and plugged your iron into a Smart Plug socket.

These products follow hot on the heels of the same sub-brand's Home Music Everywhere streamer. It means D-Link devices can now theoretically turn on just about everything in your house, though not, by and large, control things beyond that - that's where IFTTT will eventually come into its own, with kit springing into life when it detects it's been turned on.    

It's got to be said, these are notably less attractive than Withings' devices. Still, the proof is in the using with these things, really, and rest assured we'll have a review as soon as D-Link comes up with the goods.
